MATH 400 – Statistics and Probability introduces students to the full breadth of IB Mathematics topics in probability and statistics, beginning with counting principles, factorial notation, permutations, combinations, and Bayes’ theorem, before progressing to discrete random variables, probability distributions, expectation, variance, and standard deviation, including the binomial and Poisson distributions. Continuous topics cover the normal distribution, the standard normal curve, quantiles, and the Central Limit Theorem. Students then explore bivariate statistics through correlation (Pearson’s and Spearman’s), regression lines, least squares methods, and the coefficient of determination. Advanced inference topics include estimation and confidence intervals, hypothesis testing with Z-tests, t-tests, chi-square tests, tests for proportions and correlation, and analysis of error probabilities and statistical power. By the end of the course, learners will gain comprehensive mastery of IB Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI) statistics and probability content at both SL and HL levels, equipping them with the analytical insight and confidence to apply statistical thinking in diverse academic and real-world contexts.
